GLP-1 and obesity: the equity-vs-sustainability dilemma in Latin America
At the International Congress on Obesity, held in Mexico City on July 23, specialists and PAHO warned that while GLP-1 receptor agonists have transformed obesity care, access, prevention and policy follow-through remain deeply uneven across the region. Speakers pressed for a comprehensive model that treats obesity as a chronic disease with biological, environmental and social determinants — not medication alone.
For Thera, this is a textbook case of "Effective Access" in tension with itself: clinical evidence is outrunning the capacity of LATAM health systems to prioritize, finance and monitor these therapies equitably. The question ministries of health, insurers and industry should be asking isn't whether to cover GLP-1s — it's under what value criteria and with what safeguards.
